Thiago Silva has confirmed his re-signing with Fluminense. The Brazilian club, which saw the 39-year-old defender rise through the academy levels in the late 1990s prior to playing 143 games between 2006 and 2009, is poised to offer him a two-year contract.
After a trophy-filled 15-year stint in Europe with AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and most recently, Chelsea, Silva is returning to his own country.
On May 19, the previous captain of Brazil will make his farewell appearance for the Blues against Bournemouth. It should be an emotional evening at Stamford Bridge.
Silva has reportedly turned in several offers from Premier League teams to rejoin his old team, Fluminense. When his Blues contract ends at the end of the current campaign, the defender will depart west London after four years on a free transfer.
After leading the Blues to victory in the Champions League and making more than 150 appearances, the Brazilian has established himself as a legendary player. Silva has already acknowledged that the team “mean a lot” to him and promised to come back eventually.
The 39-year-old has agreed to sign a two-year deal with Fluminense and will then return home for a second stint with the Brazilian team. When Silva returns, he will be looking to put an end to Fluminense’s twelve-year league title drought.
