Union Berlin in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Juventus and Italy Captain

It is being reported that Bundesliga side Union Berlin are in advanced talks to sign Italian and Juventus captain Leonardo Bonucci.

It is being reported that the veteran centre-back has fallen out of favour with his current employers at Juventus, and that he himself is in a favour to a move to the German capital may be in the offing for him. If the move goes through, it will be the first time Bonucci will be playing outside of Italy. The 36-year-old has only ever played for Italian clubs in the Serie A.

Bonucci is said to be becoming increasingly redundant in Turin, as the Italian giants are on course to reconstructing their squad in the background of them being suspended from European football this season because of financial fair play violations. He returned to Juventus in 2018 for his second stint after he already played for them for 8 years between 20210-2017.

His move to Union Berlin maybe be mutually beneficial considering that he will be given a role of stature at the German capital, and also because the upcoming season will be an important one for them.

Union Berlin has had a highly active transfer window as they try to get ready for their UEFA Champions League debut. Union Berlin has already signed players like Brenden Aaronson, Alex Kral, and David Datro Fofana after finishing fourth last season. Additionally, they have also completed the signing of Robin Gosens from Inter Milan.

Union Berlin can offer Bonucci a shot at Champions League glory, a trophy Bonucci has never won. Although it is unlikely that Union Berlin will win the competition, an above average performance will be enough to attract attention towards the first-time competitors.

Italian transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that both the parties are in favour of the move. With the only discussion remaining regarding the transfer fee and wages.
