Pep Guardiola “wants to manage a national team” before retirement

Pep Guardiola has made no secret of managing the national team in his coaching career before he retires from management. The former Barcelona head coach has had stints at many top clubs steering them to glories. Still, the Spanish manager feels he should manage a national team before calling quits on his managerial career.

The current Manchester City head coach was earlier linked to Brazil’s job national team before denying those rumours. Guardiola has a contract with Manchester City until 2025. then it remains to be seen what his next decision would be.

But Guardiola also disclosed that he views leading a national team at major international competitions like the World Cup, the European Championship, or Copa America as a major turning point in his coaching career.

Pep Guardiola responded as follows when asked if he still had goals to pursue:

“A national team. I would like to train a national team for a World Cup or a European Championship. I would like that.”

In response to a question about his favourite national team, he said:

“I don’t know who would want me! To work for a national team they have to want you, just like a club.”

With his unmatched tactical skill and successful track record, Guardiola’s potential entry into the world of international football promises to be an intriguing development.

The manager emphasised, nevertheless, that he hasn’t given himself the objective of winning the Copa America, the World Cup, or the Euros.

“I never thought about it like that [with the goal to win a World Cup],” he said.

“When I started in this I never thought about winning a league title or winning the Champions League. No. I thought, I have a job? OK.

“I would like to have the experience of living through a World Cup, or a Euro, or a Copa América, or whatever it is. I would like that. I don’t know when that would be if that is five, 10, 15 years from now but I would like to have the experience of being a manager in a World Cup.”
