Mauricio Pochettino agrees deal with Chelsea to become next head coach

Mauricio Pochettino has agreed terms to become the new Chelsea manager, and will take over for pre-season this summer after what has been the club’s worst Premier League campaign in 20 years.

Telegraph Sport revealed the deal had been agreed just hours after interim manager Frank Lampard’s side failed to win at Stamford Bridge against Nottingham Forest, the club with the worst away record in the Premier League.

The former Tottenham Hotspur manager was not at the game and is understood to be out of Britain currently. His family base remains in London although since he left Spurs in November 2019 he has managed in Paris and has a home in Barcelona where he spent much of his playing career.

The Argentine has taken his time agreeing terms with the consortium that owns Chelsea, led by private equity investors Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali. The club have spent around £600 million on players since the takeover 12 months ago during which time they have sacked Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter. It is expected that the club will have to invest in a new centre-forward and a new goalkeeper. Edouard Mendy came back into the side in place of Kepa Arrizabalaga, to face Forest, one of five changes.

Pochettino’s loyal staff of Jesus Perez, Miguel D’Agostino, Toni Jimenez and his son Sebastiano are all expected to join him at Chelsea.
